The aim of the project was to convert a chosen phrase into 6 symbols or abstract images, and then create a logo or symbol using a combination of some or all of the 6 symbols.
The phrase I chose was: “After the revolutionary period of the fifties and sixties, society regrouped itself, as always, into High, Middle, and Low.” (Taken from George Orwell's 1984, which I still haven't read. Must get round to that...)
The 6 symbols had to be hand drawn, and the logo had to be created in Illustrator.

I could tell you that I drew Chairman Mao's mole as a circle, which could also be seen as a 'period', as in 'revolutionary period', but I'm not that clever...
I originally tried a drawing of Elvis Presley's quiff to symbolise the Fifties, but decided to use a general 'teddy boy' quiff and make it simpler.
Once I had the idea of hairstyles to show the 'revolutionary period' and 'Fifties', then using the idea of The Beatles* to represent the Sixties was a no brainer.

About half way through my initial sketches, I decided to use hair and hats to show the whole phrase. Using the same layout as the Sixties image, I chose a selection of hats which represented different class and occupations in society.
The idea of both 'society' and 'regrouping' initially gave me a bit of trouble to begin with, but once I had decided to use hair and hats, then I found the image and the idea came relatively quickly.
Using the 3 images of a Top Hat, Bowler Hat and Flat Cap, I tried to show the different classes to show 'High, Middle and Low'
The image below is my final logo which was created in Illustrator after I had scanned and vectorised my original drawings.
As all my original images were black on white, I decided to reverse the image for the main logo, giving it a clean and also slightly vintage, nostalgic feel.
